Anzac Day

It's almost Anzac Day and it's very hard not to be a little over it with the overkill by the press for the 100th anniversary. It makes me a little angry that they often use these solemn occasions in such an exploitative way (yes Woolworths we are looking at you!) and, in doing so, turn people off from what are events that deserve not just our attention but our veneration. With the media frenzy and the passage of time it can be easy to lose sight of why Anzac Day still deserves to be remembered and revered. Look around your family, at your husband, your father, your brother or your son and even your daughters. Chances are that if this were a hundred years ago at least one and possibly all of them could be heading off overseas into a war. Waving them goodbye you would not know if they would come back  in one piece, if at all.

With all of conflicts that still plague our planet, the terrible, pointless loss of lives around the world, Anzac Day matters more than ever. Not because it's an anniversary, not because the media tells us it's important but because of all of those whose sacrifice gives us the life and freedom we all enjoy today. Lest we forget.

Till next time
