Over and Over

I think that as a business owners we often imagine that business success comes like lightening bolts.  We will be discovered and feted because of our uniqueness or, someone famous will post a selfie on their Instagram wearing our product and we’ll become famous.  The truth about most business success is far more prosaic.

It’s unlikely that your success will be because of one big break and much more likely to come from a set of steady building blocks.  The things you do to establish your products or services, to grow your customer base and following on social media and, the routine maintenance of your accounts are much more likely to form the foundation of success.  And do you know what? They actual provide a really stable base for that success.

Now I can’t always claim to take my own and ice and despite trying to do at least a daily Instagram post and comment on someone else’s post I don’t usually manage it. But by having it on my radar it happens more than it would otherwise. 

There are a few things which I do try to be more on the ball about.  Chasing up late payments (thankfully a rare occurrence these days), responding to customer enquiries quickly, checking bank and credit card statements, and processing orders.  

In short, I try to focus on existing sales and customers first and foremost, probable sales next and then, building contacts and expanding reach.  Making sure that you receive the money from a sale may seem like a no brainer but things don’t always go according to plan.  Following up enquiries quickly is the best way to show people that you are responsive.  And building contacts and expanding your reach allows you to put your product or service in front of more possible customers.

Using these building blocks may not seem as sexy as seeing your item on the latest celebrity but they can build you a solid business that will last through fads and fashion.
