Finding Your Business Currency

Spiritual Economics

I was lucky to have a week long break in Bali with some of my oldest friends a few years ago.  I've been to Bali before and I'm always amazed at how spiritual the whole place is.  Where we stay there are two temples within walking distance but there are little shrines and devotional spaces everywhere you turn.  Spirituality is part of the everyday.

It all got me to thinking about what thought we give to spirituality in our business.  I'm not talking about having morning prayers or lunch time revival meetings (though if that strikes a chord with you then go for it). I think it's really important that we run our business with more than just the bottom line in mind.  Since I started working for myself I've always had a mission statement that focuses on not just the type of business I want but on how I want clients, suppliers and staff treated (just like I'd want to be treated).  It also includes making a contribution to charity.  I believe that giving to those in need is a sure fire way to attract positive vibes to any business.  It makes you feel good to be able to help someone as well as being a legitimate tax deduction and a great promotional point. You should not be giving if you are in financial straits.  One of the cornerstones on which my husband and I structured our business is honesty.  If we make a mistake we put our hand up and apologise. We never try to cover an error.  We also encourage staff to report all errors and accidents. They can do so without worrying about any penalties.  It's one of the ways we can improve.  The upside of us having a focus on respect, honesty and giving means that we have created a business that we are proud of.   It also means that we don't have ongoing dramas. By dealing openly with things as and when they occur we don't have any negativity hanging about,  Life is so much better, and so is our business.

There are many types of currency you can consider in running your business. Work satisfaction, happiness, helping others, and ethics.  Using ethics as one of our business currencies has meant that not only have we minimised our own headaches we also have a great reputation. Now that's a great currency for any business to have.

Till next time,
