Putting your hand up

This is Your Circus

When things are not going well it can be very tempting to look for a scapegoat.  Blame something or someone else for your misfortune and you can let yourself off the hook without too much conscience. But the thing about being the person in charge is that while not everything is your fault, everything is your problem! I mean that you may not like it but, ultimately it's up to you to take charge and tackle the problem.

Sometimes you're lucky enough to be able delegate someone else to tidy up.  Maybe you have office staff to chase up your debtors or a v.a. who can handle your social media problems.  However, small business operators don't always have someone else to call on.

Sometimes you may need to handle something you don't feel proficient at.  Learning as you go is not always a bad thing.  Just be honest with people. Don't try to gloss over a mistake or cover it up.

Dealing with problems, whether they're with customers, staff, suppliers or even yourself is a great way to tighten your procedures.  In the 20 odd years I've been in business, every major problem has given me a great lesson in what not to do in the future. Some of them have also given great opportunities to move my business forward. If a customer has a gripe about something they need that they're not getting, can you step into the gap?  Remember, that it is your circus and, those definitely are your monkeys but, that means you get to be the ringmaster.  You get to decide how to handle it.

Till next time,
